Conservation Main Contractor
We act as main contractor for the conservation and repair of historic stone structures, both locally and nationwide.
We work closely with specialists in the field of heritage conservation including joiners, lead plumbers, glaziers and metalworkers, as well as with archaeologists and experts in environmental conservation.
We always apply a conservation ethic in our approach to buildings and, following SPAB principles, are sensitive to the unique conservation needs of each project.
Communication with all stakeholders for the duration of projects is at the core of our company practice, and we often engage with communities through our client’s networks with heritage outreach- for instance, through lecturing and hands on workshops.
Masonry
Stonemasonry is at the core of what we do as a workshop, and this traditional skill is taught to our apprentices in a traditional manner.
Carving
We undertake stone and woodcarving commissions for both ecclesiastical and secular environments.
Monument Conservation
We undertake the careful conservation of monuments, in particular within ecclesiastical settings.
Specialist Lime Repairs
We only use lime-based mortars in our work. As such, we have gained extensive experience and knowledge in the use and application of lime mortars, shelter-coats, hot lime mixes and nano-lime.
Clay Modelling
We make clay models for casting missing elements when repairing monuments, as well as for casting as decorative plasterwork- such as a ceiling rose or ornamental cornice.
Setting out
Setting out, or figuring out the often-complex measurements of existing stones (and their arrangement in space), is the first stage of masonry conservation work.
Letter cutting
We work closely with our clients to develop a design which suits their individual requirements. The entire process- from design through to carving- is carried out in a traditional manner: with pencil, paper, mallet and chisels.
Consulting
We act as consultant to architects, conservation organisations and individuals about the conservation and repair of historic stone structures. We are able to discuss a complete picture of the work that might be involved in a project of any scale.
Heritage Outreach
Sharing Heritage skills- through workshops, conferences and heritage open days- is an integral part of our business, both within the professional sector and for the general public. We have now created an additional outreach arm of the workshop in order to bring Heritage skills to communities. Please have a look at the website for this new entity: woldsworkshop.com
